Zap Your Way to a Better Brain

Electric Eel

I believe we are entering a new era of neurological treatment through electrical brain stimulation that began in 43 AD, when Scribonius Largus used an electric fish to treat headache. Picture that, when you are not feeling so good, smashing a fish up against your forehead! Over a couple of thousand years, experiments with electrical stimulation were used for various maladies including not entirely successful attempts to bring back people from the dead, but the work progressed, without fish, after the invention of the battery, Nevertheless, it was not until the 1900’s that new interest in the subject was created. Since then, many researchers have studied several forms of not very invasive and painless brain stimulation by applying electrodes to the scalp or using a current carrying coil to generate a changing magnetic field to stimulate the brain, and have been used to treat such problems as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. There are several products on the market as well as a growing do it yourself community of brain zappers. Since the power source is typically only a 9 volt battery, the cost is rather minimal, but I don’t recommend you try your own version at home. I think the most impressive results are laboratory studies that have demonstrated that AC stimulation can entrain and modify brain waves in order to enhance slow wave sleep, that is vital to brain health and may prevent dementia. Every day there are new reports of research experiments and increasingly wide spread use of electrical stimulation to treat neurological disorders, as well as my invention granted a U.S. patent to use closed loop feedback to enhance cognition, so it may be time for you to get zapped.
